The restaurant Locanda Verde at Hudson Yards, designed by Roman and Williams, brings together sophistication and intimacy in a way that feels both modern and timeless. The design combines elements of distilled "old world" charm with contemporary innovation and convenience, creating a space that feels both timeless and modern.
The restaurant's lighting by L'Observatoire International plays a crucial role in this balance, enhancing the rich materials and careful composition of the space. Soft amber tones throughout create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Custom Venini glass luminaires add texture and elegance, while working harmonically with the alabaster light fixtures and wood paneling with integrated light. Down-lit bars and tabletops offer subtle, controlled illumination, contributing to the space's refined mood.
The restaurant is divided into distinct zones: banquette-style dining areas, a jewel-box bar, and a more casual café. Each space is tailored with precise lighting, adapting to its specific character while maintaining a cohesive flow from day to night. The bar, with seamlessly integrated lighting, becomes a central focal point, while the dining areas enjoy a softer, ambient glow, offering a more relaxed vibe.
On the walls, abstract expressionist paintings by Robert De Niro Sr.—the father of Locanda Verde partner Robert De Niro—further enhance the experience. The dynamic interplay between lighting and artwork creates a multi-layered environment, where the design and lighting come together to form a space that is sophisticated, intimate, and thoughtfully illuminated.
