Gehry’s 80,000 square foot expansion of the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be built entirely underground, increasing exhibition space by 60% without altering the existing Greek revival façade. This project will see the renovation of the Great Stair Hall, added entrances and improved circulation, as well as the creation of new exhibition spaces and an education center.
The lighting will visually link the historic building to the new addition, creating a seamless transition between the two. It will bring a feeling of sunlight to the underground spaces while underlining the monumentality of the architecture.
L’O scope includes all new and renovated public spaces, circulation and exhibition spaces.
