SENIOR LIGHTING DESIGNER

 

Award winning architectural lighting design firm looking for a full time Senior Lighting Designer with at least 5 years of relevant work experience in Lighting Design in Manhattan.   

 

Candidate should be a professional who is exceptionally well organized, resourceful, conscientious, dedicated and detail-oriented with very good written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.

 

Qualifications:

The role of Lighting Designer requires special knowledge and skills, typically acquired through University study at a Master’s Degree level or through direct work experience.

Master’s degree or higher in Architecture, Electrical Engineer or related field
5-7 years’ work experience with an understanding in lighting design across architectural, interior and landscape design projects.
Ability to direct and lead staff and crew in lighting projects
Proficiency in AutoCAD
Developed skills in 3D modeling software (Revit, Rhino) 
Advanced knowledge in Adobe suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and MS Office
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and superb ability to multi-task.
Strong sensibility and appreciation for design communication
Time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects

 

 

Responsibilities:

Lighting Designer duties and responsibilities at L’Observatoire shall include:

Completing all phases of project lighting design, starting from the original conception to final phases
Directing and reviewing the work of Junior Lighting Designers and Lighting Interns
Provide lighting design solutions appropriate to client brief, budget and relevant standards.
Attend client and design team meetings, sometimes involving national and/or international travel.
Prepare presentations to clients
Develop lighting design solutions (i.e. engineering exercise) - lighting calculations, research of fixture alternatives, review of fixture samples, construction of temporary mockups
Oversee the documentation of the lighting design via CAD layouts, lighting details, light fixture schedules, lighting control specifications
Plan and execute lighting mockups as needed throughout the project
Review cost estimates of project lighting specifications and adjust lighting design to meet owner’s budget.
Review construction progress of lighting installation at project site and issue field reports to design team.
Supervise final aiming of light fixtures and lighting controls programming.

PROJECT MANAGER (ARCHITECT / INTERIOR DESIGNER)

 

L'Observatoire International seeks architect / interior designer with 8-10 years of work experience (minimum 5 years in project management role) for full time position.  

 

The project manager will be responsible for leading a team of lighting designers from Schematic Design through Construction Administration, for projects of various scales around the world. Short-term international travel (2-5 days at a time) to Europe / UK, China, SE Asia, and other locations may be required on an occasional basis. Excellent time management and client and team coordination skills are key, as is the ability to problem-solve within changing conditions.

 

Qualifications:

Excellent knowledge of and experience with all phases (SD through CA) of the architectural process.
Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit experience a plus but not required.
Proficiency in Adobe suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and Microsoft Office
Sensitivity and appreciation for design aesthetics (of all kinds)
English fluency required. French or Chinese (Mandarin) language ability a plus.
Strong analytical skills, an attention to detail, and the ability to problem solve and make decisions based on changing conditions.
The ability to manage multiple projects at various stages of design (some with aggressive timelines).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Diplomacy is crucial.
Excellent organizational skills including: prioritization, scheduling, time management, and team coordination.
The ability to interact with all levels of a project team, from client senior management to design team to contractor.

 

Responsibilities:

Manage 8-10 projects (lighting component only) from SD - CA phases (i.e. thru project completion and final lighting setup).
Leading an internal team of up to 3-4 people: project manager (yourself), senior lighting designer, junior lighting designer / production assistant, and intern. Working closely with our in-house team to produce documentation; the project manager will be responsible for some drawing production (RCPs, lighting details, etc).
Manage day-to-day communication and information exchange with the client and the design team.
Attend meetings with the client/owner/architect/other consultants, review mockups, provide on-site construction management and aiming/focusing for project openings worldwide (may require occasional short term travel 2-5 days at a time to Asia / Europe on occasional basis).

LIGHTING DESIGN INTERN

 

We are looking for talented lighting design interns for full-time three to six month paid internship at L’Observatoire International. Gain exposure to exciting projects, excellent leaders in the industry, and hands-on experience in all phases of project work. The lighting design intern will work directly with our project managers & full time design staff. Candidate must be committed, independent workers and willing to learn.

 

Requirements:
Completed Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Interior Design -or- enrollment in Masters Degree program for Lighting Working knowledge of the following programs required: AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, AGI32 / Dialux, Microsoft Office Suite.
